The Scholarship and The Benefactor

The H.M Hubbard Law Scholarship was created by the terms of the Will of Henry Malcolm Hubbard, who died in 1946 and wished to encourage trainee solicitors in England and Wales to study some aspect of the law of France, Spain or Canada.

Henry Malcolm Hubbard has a London solicitor with substantial business interest in Canada, Spain and Latin America. It is thought that Mr. Hubbard worked in Barcelona for a long period and was instrumental in bringing electricity to that part of Spain through his involvement, curiously, with a Canadian company, the Barcelona Traction, Light and Power Company Limited. One of Mr. Hubbard’s descendants lives in Canada.

In his Will of 3 April 1946, as well as leaving legacies to family, friends, employees and a number of not-for-profit organisations, Mr. Hubbard left funds to provide income for his stepdaughter, his sisters and their families, with half the capital on their deaths being payable to not-for-profit organisations and the other half being used to create a fund in perpetuity to provide the H M Hubbard Law Scholarship.

Mr. Hubbard spent the final months of his life in Hove, Sussex and Cobham, Surrey and died on 23 December 1946. The scholarship fund came into existence in October 1962.
